Thanks to Sally Hinkley, I am getting my behind in gear (glued to seat) with pen in hand.

If January has got you feeling all prickly and grumpy, you will have company in the lionfish.

Medford Switchbox Project

This year, I worked with kids at Columbus Elementary School to design public art on two traffic signal switchboxes in the school neighborhood. Here are the Before and After shots:

Location: Boston Ave. and College Ave. (Before)
Location: Harvard St. and Willis Ave. (Before)
Another shot before cleanup, priming and painting.

Aren't they wonderful? The kids are really excited to see their work on permanent public display. The kids worked on the stamps and stencils in the spring and they were completed in August. If you are interested in doing a similar project in your neighborhood, I suggest painting in the spring or fall, when it's not so hot.

Sweet Square #1

Hello Friends,

Fall - a new school year for the kiddos, so I feel like I should be productive.

So here's my "Sweet Square" for today. It is a 30-day challenge inspired by Ann Marie, who was inspired by Diandra Mae.

I wanted to try DoInk for a while but found out that they shut down their web app last week =(. Very sad but understandable, since they are directing their energy toward mobile apps.

I searched for a way to make a flip book and found this: Benettonplay.com. The flipbook can be exported to a PDF for printing and making into a paper book! Very neet. They also have other fun toys on their site.

So here's my very rusty animation-try. My wrist is a little sore from piano so I didn't tinker too much. I think the blinking eyes are convincing

Thanks for visiting!

Inspired by the kids

Inspired by a request for crafters at http://childsown.wordpress.com/ I'm showing you some of the toys I've made in the past few years. The designs come from the girls. Sometimes their drawings are so cute that I want them to become a stuffed animal. My skills are not as developed as Child's Own Studio but some day if I practice enough they will be. =)

Pineapple Alien Monster!

This pink cat is also a hand puppet (copied from a commercial product that had a book attached). We decided it would be fun to dress alike.

Getting ready for Children's Art Showcase 2012!

Once again we will exhibit artwork from Medford's 3rd and 7th graders. Hopefully we will be able to also reach out to Medford High School too.

The kids have been so excited to see their work displayed in the show. It has grown from 50 to more than 250 participants and the upcoming exhibit will hopefully include even more kids.

If you wish to support this project, I've created a supply list on the Dick Blick art supply website. We've already received a $10 donation! Thanks for supporting the arts in Medford.

Children's Art Showcase 2011

This is a much-delayed post of photos the 2011 Children's Art Showcase, which happened in February. Thank you to the Friends of the Medford Family Network, Medford Arts Council, McGlynn Middle School, Medford Arts Center, Inc. and Meadow Glen Mall for assistance with this project. The teachers contributed outstanding and creative work done by Medford 3rd and 7th graders at Columbus ES, Brooks ES, and McGlynn MS.

UPDATE: we now have a Facebook page! Check out the progress of the 2012 Exhibit, which will happen in March.

IF: Racing!

What an awesome coincidence: the Kindergarten class has voted to name themselves the "Racing Class"! So I kicked myself into 1st gear to get this in. Sorry for the long hiatus. Happy Halloween!
P.S. Is it just me or has Halloween become a weeklong race from one event to another???
P.P.S. Michelle, I give you credit for the inspiration behind making this into an activity for my daughter's Kindergarten class! And there's nothing like a potential audience to spur a better performance.  =)

IF: "Focused" Happy Groundhog Day!

So I know this isn't such an original idea but I love drawing rodents! Especially chubby sleepy ones. Maybe this little guy won't be focused enough to see a shadow...

Stay warm everybody!
